Sioux Falls, SD Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Under the city's 2021 International Residential Code amendments, smoke alarms must go in each sleeping room, in the immediate vicinity outside bedrooms, and on every additional story including basements and habitable attics. Alarms within 3 feet of a bathroom door aren't required if that placement would block coverage elsewhere. Where more than one alarm is required in a dwelling unit, they must be interconnected so that one activation sounds all of them, unless listed wireless alarms are used that all sound together. Permitted alterations, repairs, or additions valued over $1,000 trigger the same smoke-alarm requirements as new construction, with exceptions for exterior-only work like roofing, siding, windows, doors, porches, or decks, and for plumbing/mechanical-only work.
