Summary

Every house, building or structure in the City containing one- and two-family dwelling units occupied in whole or in part for residential purposes and not otherwise regulated by MGL c. 148, § 26A or 26B, shall, within 90 days of the effective date of this section, be equipped with approved smoke detectors. Owners of such buildings or structures shall install either an approved monitored battery-powered smoke detector or an approved primary-power smoke detector on each level of habitation and on the basement level.

Springfield's smoke-detector ordinance, § 178-14 of the City Code, requires owners of one- and two-family dwellings not otherwise covered by MGL c. 148, § 26A or 26B to install an approved smoke detector on every level of habitation and in the basement, a monitored battery-powered unit or a primary-power unit, within 90 days of the section's effective date. Buildings with three or more dwelling units need detectors in each unit, common area, hallway, story, basement, and porch, as the Fire Department specifies. Violations & Fines

Owners face a fine of up to $200 for each day a building stays out of compliance. Anyone who removes, tampers with, or damages a required smoke detector is separately fined up to $200 per offense, under § 178-14B(7).
