Smoke alarms in Tuscaloosa are governed by the city's adopted codes and enforced by Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue. Under Code Section 11-20 the city adopts the 2021 International Fire Code, and the city has also adopted the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code and 2021 International Residential Code. The IFC's existing-buildings provisions (Sections 1103.8 and 1104) require single-station smoke alarms in Group R occupancies and dwellings - in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms, and on each story including basements. The 2021 IRC (Section R314) imposes the same locations for new construction and major renovations, with alarms hardwired, battery-backed, and interconnected so one activation sounds them all. The City of Tuscaloosa's official guidance states that landlords are required to provide working smoke alarms in rental houses and apartments, and that tenants are responsible for maintaining them in good working order; renters with a noncompliant landlord can contact the Fire Marshal's Office at 205-248-5420. Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue also runs 'Get Alarmed! Tuscaloosa,' a free, grant-funded program that installs smoke alarms for residents who request an appointment. The city recommends at least one alarm on every level of the home, including the basement, and near every sleeping area, with monthly testing and replacement of alarms every 8-10 years.
Missing, disabled, or nonfunctioning required smoke alarms are violations of the adopted International Fire Code and International Property Maintenance Code, enforceable as misdemeanors under Tuscaloosa Code Section 11-22 (penalized under Section 1-8). Landlords who fail to provide working alarms in rentals can be reported to the Fire Marshal's Office.
