Union City enforces residential smoke and carbon monoxide alarm requirements through the California Residential Code and state law, administered locally with the Alameda County Fire Department. Under California Health and Safety Code Section 13113.7 and California Residential Code Section 314, smoke alarms must be installed in each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, and on each additional story of the dwelling, including basements. When more than one alarm is required, the alarms must be interconnected so that activation of one sounds them all.
