Clearwater is a coastal urban area without formally mapped wildfire hazard zones, but properties bordering preserves or undeveloped tracts must follow Florida Forest Service wildfire mitigation guidance and Fire Code defensible-space expectations.
While Clearwater does not maintain mapped wildfire hazard severity zones in its code, Chapter 17 adopts the Florida Fire Prevention Code, which incorporates wildland-urban interface provisions. Properties adjacent to Cooper's Point, Moccasin Lake Nature Park, the Clearwater Greenway, or large undeveloped tracts are encouraged to maintain at least 30 feet of defensible space around structures, store firewood and propane away from buildings, and keep gutters and roofs clear of combustible debris. The Florida Forest Service tracks the Keetch-Byram Drought Index for Pinellas County and may issue regional burn bans during high-risk periods that override otherwise allowed activity.
There are no wildfire-zone-specific fines, but failure to maintain defensible space can trigger nuisance and brush-clearance violations under the Community Development Code.
