Corpus Christi faces elevated wildfire risk from grassland fires during drought. The city and Nueces County issue burn bans prohibiting all outdoor fires. No formal WUI zones designated.
While Corpus Christi is not located in a traditional forested wildfire zone, the city faces significant wildfire risk from grassland and brush fires during drought periods common in South Texas. The flat coastal terrain, persistent Gulf winds, and extended dry seasons create conditions where brush and grass fires can spread rapidly. The city and Nueces County coordinate burn bans during elevated fire-weather conditions -- these bans prohibit all outdoor burning including campfires, brush piles, and recreational fire pits. Corpus Christi does not designate formal wildland-urban interface (WUI) zones, but properties adjacent to undeveloped land, bayous, and grassland areas face higher risk. The Corpus Christi Fire Department maintains mutual-aid agreements with surrounding jurisdictions for wildfire response. The Texas A&M Forest Service monitors statewide conditions and issues fire-weather advisories. Property owners in higher-risk areas should maintain defensible space by clearing dead vegetation and keeping grass below 12 inches. Check current conditions at the CCFD Fire Prevention Bureau at (361) 826-3930.
Violating a burn ban: Class C misdemeanor with fines up to $500. Starting a fire that spreads to neighboring property: civil liability and potential criminal arson charges.
