Corpus Christi adopted the 2021 International Fire Code (IFC) with local amendments effective August 1, 2023. Recreational fire pits and outdoor fireplaces must be located at least 10 feet from any combustible structure, fence, or overhanging vegetation. Fires must be attended by a responsible person at all times with a means of extinguishment readily available such as a garden hose or fire extinguisher. Only clean, dry natural materials like seasoned firewood may be burned -- rubber, plastic, treated lumber, and other synthetic materials are prohibited. The Corpus Christi Fire Department regularly issues burn bans during drought conditions, which are common in the subtropical climate. During active burn bans, all outdoor fires including recreational fire pits are prohibited. The city recommends checking current burn-ban status before using any outdoor fire feature.
