Corpus Christi requires smoke detectors per the 2021 IFC and TX H&S Code Ch. 766. Alarms needed in each bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level. CCFD offers free alarms.
Corpus Christi enforces smoke detector requirements through the adopted 2021 International Fire Code and Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 766 (Fire Safety in Residential Dwellings). Smoke alarms are required inside each bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms, and on each level of the home including the basement. Alarms must be interconnected so that activation of one triggers all units. For new construction and remodels, hardwired smoke alarms with battery backup are required. Existing homes may use battery-powered units but they must have working batteries at all times. The Corpus Christi Fire Department identifies inoperable smoke alarms and missing batteries as one of the most common fire code violations during inspections. Texas Property Code Section 92.254 also requires landlords to provide working smoke alarms in rental properties. The CCFD offers a free smoke alarm program for residents who need detectors -- contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at (361) 826-3930 to request alarms.
Landlords failing to provide smoke alarms face liability under TX Property Code. Code violations during fire inspections: correction required. Free alarms available through CCFD program.
