Ohio Revised Code Section 2923.16 governs handgun transport in vehicles. Since SB 215 in 2022, qualifying adults 21+ may carry loaded handguns concealed inside private vehicles without a CCW license. Columbus follows state rules.
Ohio Revised Code Section 2923.16 establishes vehicle carry rules statewide. Adults qualifying for permitless carry under SB 215 may transport loaded handguns concealed on their person or readily accessible inside a private vehicle they occupy. CCW licensees retain similar privileges. The driver must promptly inform any law-enforcement officer during a traffic stop that a firearm is present, a duty added during the 2022 reform. Long guns transported in vehicles must remain unloaded except in certain hunting contexts. The firearm cannot be in the possession of an intoxicated occupant, and carry on commercial vehicles or buses follows separate federal rules. Columbus cannot impose additional vehicle-storage requirements under ORC Section 9.68 preemption.
Improperly transporting a loaded handgun, failing to notify an officer, or carrying while intoxicated is a fourth or fifth-degree felony under ORC 2923.16, punishable by fines up to $5,000 and up to 18 months imprisonment.
