Lansing, MI Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Vending Zones (2026)

Section 1250.02.10(c) reads in full: "No mobile food vending shall be permitted within the DT-3 District except as part of a temporary special event lasting no more than 24 hours." DT-3 is Lansing's downtown core zoning district; outside it, the district use tables list mobile food vending as a use permitted with conditions ("C") across the City's other mixed-use and commercial districts, subject to the standards in § 1250.02.10 itself.

That means a food truck operator planning a regular, ongoing presence, parking at the same commercial lot every week, for example, needs a site outside the DT-3 boundary or needs to fold the vending into a City-recognized special event with its own time limit. Two co-location rules in the same section widen what a compliant site outside DT-3 can host: subsection (i)(1) allows up to two mobile food vending vehicles to share one parcel without further review except during temporary special events, and (i)(2) lets more than two co-locate if the site goes through site plan review under §§ 1260.03 and 1260.04 (or an accepted plot plan), follows the landscaping standards in §§ 1252.06 and 1252.07, and provides at least one trash receptacle and one outdoor seating area per truck.

The DT-3 carve-out exists alongside, not instead of, the sidewalk and right-of-way rules in subsections (d) and (e): even a truck operating under the 24-hour special-event exception in DT-3 still cannot block a sidewalk or occupy an on-street parking space.
