Food trucks in South Jordan may operate on private commercial property with owner consent, at permitted events, and (with limited restrictions) on public right-of-way. Utah state law limits cities from overly restricting mobile food business locations.
Utah Code ยง11-56-105 restricts a city's ability to impose blanket location bans on food trucks. South Jordan may not prohibit operation on private property in commercial and certain mixed-use zones when the property owner consents, and cannot impose proximity-to-brick-and-mortar-restaurant buffers as a blanket rule. Trucks must nonetheless meet zoning-use standards, parking, and setback rules. On the public right-of-way, cities retain control โ truck parking on public streets is generally limited to 4 hours in a given location and must not obstruct traffic or access. Operating in city parks, on sidewalks, or within street rights-of-way typically requires a special event permit or park concession agreement. Residential zones generally do not allow food truck operations except at private events (birthday parties, small gatherings) for limited durations. Noise from generators and amplified music must comply with South Jordan's noise ordinance. Food trucks at permitted events (The District, Daybreak Lake events, city-sanctioned gatherings) operate under the event organizer's umbrella permit. Signage must not encroach into the right-of-way.
