Bayonne, NJ Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Bayonne City Code Sec 4-6, adopted January 22, 2025 by Ord. No. O-25-08, covers garage sales, yard sales, attic sales, rummage sales, and similar casual private sales advertised to the public and held on a homeowner's premises. Section 4-6.2 requires a license before conducting a private sale, issued by the City Clerk upon a written application stating the date, place, and type of merchandise, and caps any one location at no more than two permits within a twelve-month period. Section 4-6.3, as amended April 16, 2025 by Ord.

No. O-25-27, sets the license fee at $10 but waives it for the first three garage sale licenses issued for any one site during a calendar year running January 1 through December 31; charitable and religious societies pay no fee at all when proceeds go to their charitable purpose. Section 4-6.6 further limits each permitted sale to the hours of 9:00 a.m. to sunset and bars any permit from covering more than two consecutive days. Section 4-6.7 makes a violation punishable by a fine up to $1,250, with each day a sale continues without the required license treated as a separate offense.
