Pottstown, PA Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Borough Code § 500, Subsection 11 does not regulate how often a resident may hold a yard sale or how many days it can run; instead it prohibits the activity entirely in a defined set of zoning districts. The provision states that yard sales located on and associated with residentially used properties, including the adjacent sidewalks, are prohibited in the Downtown (D), Gateway East (GE), and Gateway West (GW) Districts, the Borough's core commercial and mixed-use corridors along High Street and the gateway approaches. Outside those three districts, meaning in the Borough's residential zoning districts such as the Neighborhood Residential and Traditional Town Neighborhood Districts, the code sets no cap on frequency or duration for a casual sale of household items.

The Borough's definitions section folds several familiar names into one regulated term: YARD SALE is defined to include garage sale, porch sale, lawn sale, rummage sale, flea market sale, or other similar casual sale of tangible personal property on a residentially used property, so the district ban reaches a sale marketed under any of those labels equally. Separately, Chapter 27's sign regulations at § 706 exempt yard sale signs from the sign permit requirement altogether, meaning a resident in a permitted district does not need a sign permit to advertise the sale on-premises, though the sign still must comply with the general restrictions referenced in that section.
