Sec. 74-82(13) sits among the signs every zoning district allows without a permit. A rummage or garage sale sign can't exceed nine square feet in area or six feet in height, the same size cap the county applies to real estate directional and home-occupation signs elsewhere in Sec. 74-82. The distinguishing limit for a garage sale is time, not frequency: each sign is limited to 72 hours per sale, so once that window closes the sign has to come down, whether or not a new sale is planned for the following weekend.

The county allows up to three such signs to be placed off the seller's own property to direct traffic, on top of any sign on the sale site itself. Because Sec. 74-82 signs need no zoning permit, there's no county office to register a sale with and no annual count the county tracks; the ordinance is silent on how many sales a household can hold in a year or a season. Residents inside an incorporated city or village, such as Lake Geneva, Delavan, Elkhorn, Whitewater, Burlington, Williams Bay, Fontana, East Troy, Genoa City, Sharon, Walworth, Darien, Bloomfield or Mukwonago, are governed by that municipality's own sign ordinance, not this county chapter, which applies only in the unincorporated towns under Walworth County zoning.
