Lynnwood, WA Historic Preservation: Historic-Cultural Monuments (2026)

0830(H), any building, structure, site, object or landscape, including trees and other plants, can be nominated for the city of Lynnwood register of historic landmarks. The structure or feature must be at least 50 years old and possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association tied to Washington State or Lynnwood history, architecture, archaeology or cultural heritage. Additional criteria weighed by the board include association with significant events or persons, distinctive architectural craftsmanship, and unique neighborhood landmarks. Cemeteries, birthplaces, moved structures and religious properties are ordinarily excluded unless they meet narrow exceptions listed in the code.

Any person may nominate a property, but only with the owner's written consent; the History and Heritage Board holds a public hearing after mailed and published notice at least 14 days out, then issues written findings. If approved, the owner must record the designation with the Snohomish County auditor within 30 days, creating a covenant binding the owner's heirs and successors to maintain the property's historic features for at least 10 years. Listed properties are marked on the city's zoning map and become eligible for historic property adjustments and waivers under the same section, including relief from setback, parking, lot coverage and landscaping standards administered by the development and business services director.

A property can be removed from the register by the owner, or by the board without owner consent if alterations destroy historic integrity, following the same nomination-style procedure.
