Macon-Bibb County, GA Historic Preservation: Historic-Cultural Monuments (2026)

Section 17-8, adopted by Ordinance No. O-17-0050 on July 5, 2017, designates Rosa Parks Square as a place of reflection honoring Rosa Parks' legacy once the adjacent Poplar Street Commons project was completed. The same section bars anyone from consuming, selling or using alcoholic beverages in the square at any time, while expressly preserving the square's use for community concerts, dance classes, movie nights and other community events. ' That puts the decision to move any commemorative marker in the square in the hands of the elected county commission rather than the parks department alone, a higher bar than the routine park-permission scheme in Section 17-7 that lets department directors sign off on signage and tents elsewhere.

An editor's note in the codified chapter explains that this ordinance was originally numbered Section 17-7 by the enacting body but was renumbered Section 17-8 during codification because that number was already occupied.
