Kendall County, IL Holiday Decorations: Lawn Ornament Rules (2026)

The Section 36-971(b)(2) obstruction table that governs what can sit inside a required yard setback gives lawn furniture, such as sun dials, bird baths, and similar architectural features an X in all three columns, front, side and rear, and lets those items encroach to within 2½ feet of a lot line, the closest allowance in the entire table alongside flagpoles and ornamental light standards. That is markedly looser than most items on the same table: garages and detached carports get no front-yard allowance at all, sheds and playhouses are barred from front yards entirely, and swimming pools cannot go in a front yard either.

Even at 2½ feet, the general conditions in Section 36-971(b)(1) still apply: the ornament cannot sit inside a recorded easement unless the easement exists solely to serve that property, and it cannot obstruct drainage or block the corner-clearance sightline triangle in Section 36-970(e), which limits anything higher than two feet within 40 feet of a street corner. Because lawn furniture as written already covers seasonal and architectural yard pieces broadly, and the Code sets no limit on quantity, size, lighting, or holiday theme for these items, a resident decorating for a holiday with inflatable figures, statuary or similar freestanding ornaments in the yard faces no additional County zoning restriction beyond the 2½-foot lot-line clearance and the drainage and easement conditions that apply to every yard obstruction.
