Galt requires a home occupation permit plus business license. Activity must be incidental, conducted inside the dwelling, with no non-resident employees, no signage, and limited or no customer visits on-site.
Galt Municipal Code Title 18 (Zoning) regulates home occupations to preserve residential character. Standard conditions include: business activity limited to residents of the dwelling, no more than 25 percent of floor area used for the business, no outside storage of materials or equipment, no signage visible from the street, no retail sales on premises, and no generation of noise, odor, vibration, or traffic beyond typical residential levels. Prohibited home occupations typically include auto repair, welding, kennels, medical clinics, and any use involving hazardous materials. Applicants submit an application to the Community Development Department with a site plan and affidavit of compliance. Some occupations are ministerial (over-the-counter approval) while others require a minor use permit hearing. Annual business license renewal through the Finance Department is required.
Operating without permit: abatement notice, daily fines up to 500 dollars, and possible revocation of business license.
