Galt lies entirely in a Local Responsibility Area on the flat Sacramento Valley floor. CAL FIRE maps do not designate any Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones within the city, so state defensible-space mandates apply in a limited form.
The California Office of the State Fire Marshal publishes Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps identifying Moderate, High, and Very High zones. Galt and its immediate surroundings are shown as Local Responsibility Area with no mapped Very High zones, reflecting the flat, irrigated farmland and urban fabric of the community. As a result, the extensive requirements of California Public Resources Code Section 4291 (100-foot defensible space, ember-resistant vents, Chapter 7A construction) do not apply on a citywide basis. However, properties adjacent to large open fields, canal banks, or dry grassland should still maintain a defensible perimeter, keep vegetation mowed, and store flammable materials away from structures. Cosumnes CSD Fire Department provides seasonal defensible-space education and may require clearance around structures during weed abatement season. New construction citywide must still meet California Building Code and Fire Code ignition-resistance standards and use listed roofing materials.
