All Galt dwellings must have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, per California Health and Safety Code 13113.7 and 13113.8. Alarms installed after 2014 must be 10-year sealed lithium battery units or hardwired with battery backup.
California smoke alarm law applies statewide and is enforced in Galt by Cosumnes CSD Fire Department and the City for rental inspections and at point-of-sale. Health and Safety Code Section 13113.7 requires every dwelling unit intended for human occupancy to have a smoke alarm in each sleeping room, in hallways or areas giving access to sleeping rooms, and on each story. Battery-only alarms sold and installed after July 1, 2014 must be tamper-resistant, have a hush feature, and carry a 10-year non-removable sealed battery. Where alterations or additions require a permit exceeding $1,000, existing alarms must be upgraded to current code. Carbon monoxide alarms are separately required under Section 13260 in every home with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage. Landlords must test alarms at tenant change-in and certify function. Removing or disabling a required alarm is a violation and can expose property owners to civil liability after a fire.
