Galt Police enforce CVC Section 22651(k) to tow vehicles parked on public streets more than 72 hours and CVC 22669 for vehicles abandoned on public or private property. Residents can report abandoned vehicles online or by phone for investigation.
A vehicle parked in the same location on a Galt public street for more than 72 hours is presumed abandoned and may be marked, cited, and towed by Galt Police under CVC Section 22651(k). Officers typically chalk tires and record VIN and location, return after 72 hours, and if the vehicle has not moved arrange tow to a contracted storage yard. Owners reclaim their vehicle by paying tow and storage fees plus any outstanding citation. CVC Section 22669 covers vehicles abandoned on private property or highways, and allows towing when the vehicle is wrecked, dismantled, or inoperative and the property owner consents. Galt participates in the Sacramento County Service Authority for Abandoned Vehicles (SAVSA), which funds removal of inoperative vehicles from public view through a small DMV registration fee. Inoperable vehicles stored in driveways or front yards also violate Galt zoning standards requiring registration and operability or full screening from the street.
Tow and storage fees typically range from 400 to 1,000 dollars. Owners may also face citations for expired registration and nuisance abatement costs billed to the property.
