Galt allows residential recreational fire pits when fueled by clean wood, propane, or natural gas. California Fire Code sets a 3-foot maximum fuel area with 15-foot setback from structures. SMAQMD may declare no-burn days that suspend wood burning citywide.
Residential fire pits in Galt are regulated under the California Fire Code as adopted by the City of Galt, with air quality oversight by the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD). Section 307 of the Fire Code limits recreational fires to a pile not larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height, placed at least 15 feet from any structure or combustible material. Portable outdoor fireplaces (chimineas, manufactured fire pits) must maintain a 15-foot clearance unless the manufacturer lists a smaller distance. Only seasoned, clean firewood may be used; trash, painted or treated wood, leaves, and construction debris are prohibited. Propane and natural gas units are preferred and are generally exempt from SMAQMD no-burn-day restrictions. Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department responds to complaints and may order a fire extinguished if it creates a nuisance or hazard. Red Flag Warnings issued by the National Weather Service can trigger temporary bans even for otherwise compliant pits.
Violations can result in an order to extinguish, administrative citations, and in the case of escape fire, liability for suppression costs.
