Galt property owners must keep lots free of dry grass, weeds, and combustible debris that create a fire hazard. The City annually declares a weed abatement season each spring and may abate nuisance vegetation at the owner's cost if not corrected after notice.
Under California Government Code Sections 39560-39588 and adopted provisions of the Galt Municipal Code, the City Council annually declares noxious and dangerous weeds a public nuisance. Once declared, the Fire Chief or designated weed abatement officer issues notices to property owners, typically in late spring, requiring cutting of dry grass, removal of rubbish, and disking or mowing of vacant parcels. Typical standards require grass and weeds to be cut to 4 inches or less, with a defensible zone around structures per California Public Resources Code Section 4291 for parcels in higher-risk fringe areas. If the owner fails to comply by the stated deadline, the City may contract for abatement and record a special assessment lien against the property for the work plus administrative costs. For agricultural parcels in commercial ag use, weed control is often accomplished through normal disking operations, but fenceline and roadside vegetation still must be managed.
Failure to abate triggers City-performed clearance billed to the owner, plus administrative penalties and a lien recorded against the parcel if unpaid.
