Galt allows home occupations in residential zones with a Home Occupation Permit. The business must be clearly incidental to the home, limited to residents of the dwelling, generate no external impacts, and comply with state cottage food and microenterprise home kitchen rules where applicable.
The Galt Zoning Ordinance permits home occupations as an accessory use to residential dwellings subject to a Home Occupation Permit issued by the Community Development Department. Typical conditions include that the business be operated only by residents of the dwelling, occupy a limited percentage of the floor area, not alter the residential character of the building, produce no offensive noise, vibration, odor, smoke, or glare detectable at the property line, and not involve on-site sales of merchandise except for items produced on premises. Vehicle storage for work trucks is limited, and outside employees are typically prohibited. A City business license is required in addition to the zoning permit. Cottage Food Operations under AB 1616 and AB 1240, codified at California Health and Safety Code 113758 and following, are permitted statewide for specified low-risk foods with county registration through Sacramento County Environmental Management. Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations under AB 626 require Sacramento County opt-in before they can operate locally.
