Bayonne's zoning code treats home-based professional practices as a distinct, tightly limited sign category. Under § 35-25.3, no sign is permitted in a residential district except the types listed in that section, and subsection c allows only 'home professional signs, identifying a permitted use in residential districts, affixed to the structure, and not exceeding one square foot in area.' That one-square-foot cap is far smaller than the institutional bulletin signs the same section allows for churches and schools, at 20 square feet, or the temporary for-sale signs allowed at 12 square feet, underscoring how narrowly the City treats home-occupation signage.

The sign must be mounted flat to the building; the section contains no allowance for a freestanding or ground-mounted version for a home business. Any sign proposal, including a home professional sign, must first go to the Zoning Officer for a permit under § 35-31.3, with dimensioned drawings of the proposed sign submitted alongside the application; the Zoning Officer has 10 business days to issue a permit or a written denial. Once installed, § 35-25.6 requires the sign be kept clean and in good repair, and § 35-25.7 lets the Zoning Officer order removal of a sign that no longer identifies an active use or that is maintained in violation of the chapter, at the cost of the property owner if a 30-day compliance notice is ignored.
