Rural home occupations may display one non-illuminated wall-mounted or freestanding sign of no more than six square feet in area and four feet in height (Yolo Zoning Code Sec. 8-2.306(ab)(7)). Residential home occupations are limited to a single non-illuminated wall-mounted sign of two square feet or less under Sec. 8-2.1207 of the Sign Standards.
Yolo County's Title 8 Zoning Code sets two different sign caps for home occupations depending on where the business is located. For RURAL home occupations on agricultural parcels (A-N, A-X, A-R), Sec. 8-2.306(ab)(7) limits signage to 'a single, non-illuminated wall-mounted or free-standing sign of not more than six (6) square feet in area and four (4) feet in height.' For RESIDENTIAL home occupations in residential zones, the general Sign Standards in Article 12 (Sec. 8-2.1207) limit a licensed home occupation to a single non-illuminated sign that is not more than two (2) square feet in area, and the sign must be attached to the dwelling (no freestanding signs). Illuminated, animated, electronic-message, and off-premises signs are prohibited for home occupations under both regulations. Any home-occupation sign that exceeds these dimensions, is illuminated, or is freestanding in a residential zone requires either a sign permit or a variance from the Planning Division.
Erecting an unpermitted or oversized home-occupation sign is a zoning violation under the Title 8 Zoning Code. Code Enforcement may issue a notice of violation, order the sign removed as a public nuisance, and revoke the business license. Under California Government Code Section 25132 administrative infraction fines are capped at $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second offense within one year, and $500 for each additional offense within one year. Each day the sign remains is a separate violation.
