Davenport prohibits any exterior sign or display advertising a home occupation. Under Zoning Ordinance Sec. 17.09(L), displays or activities that reveal from outside that a dwelling is used for anything other than a residence are not allowed.
Home occupations in Davenport must be invisible from the street. Sec. 17.09(L)(4) bars any alteration that changes the dwelling's residential character and prohibits displays or activities that indicate from the exterior that the structure is being used, in part, for a non-residential purpose. Unlike a bed-and-breakfast, which the zoning code allows one six-square-foot sign, a home occupation gets no business signage at all. The rule keeps residential blocks free of commercial advertising while still letting low-impact home businesses operate quietly.
Enforced by Development and Neighborhood Services; an unpermitted business sign is a municipal infraction subject to a cease order and civil penalties for each day it remains posted.
