Deer Park prohibits exterior business signs at home-based businesses in residential zoning districts. The home occupation provisions require that there be no exterior evidence of the business, including signs, window displays, or advertising visible from outside the home. This applies to all types of home occupations.
Deer Park's zoning ordinance requires that home occupations have no exterior indication of business activity. This prohibition extends to all forms of exterior signage including wall-mounted signs, yard signs, banners, window signs or decals, vehicle wraps for business-branded vehicles parked in the driveway, illuminated signs, and any other form of advertisement visible from outside the dwelling. The intent is to preserve the residential character of the neighborhood. Vehicles used for a home business may display standard company identification (such as a magnetic sign or small logo) but cannot be parked prominently for advertising purposes. Large commercial vehicles with business advertising should not be stored on residential property where visible from the street. The city's sign ordinance separately regulates all signage within the city, and the residential sign provisions generally limit signs to address placards, real estate signs, and temporary signs such as political or garage sale signs. Professional nameplates, which some Texas cities allow for home occupations, are not explicitly permitted in Deer Park's residential zones. Any signage that violates the home occupation conditions may be reported to Code Enforcement.
Displaying a business sign at a home occupation in a residential zone violates the zoning ordinance. Code Enforcement will issue a notice to remove the sign. Failure to comply may result in fines up to $500 per day and revocation of home occupation privileges. The sign itself may also violate the city's general sign ordinance with additional penalties.
