Dothan, AL Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Dothan City Code § 114-101 conditions every home occupation approval on having no business signage at all. For a qualifying home occupation, defined as one with no outward appearance of business activity, § 114-101(a)(13) requires "there are no signs or advertisements on the property, including on the mailbox." For a non-qualifying home occupation, which by definition already shows some outward sign of activity like a lawn care business or contractor's vehicle, § 114-101(b)(17) still bars signage: "there shall be no signs or advertisements at the home, including on the mailbox." This is stricter than the commercial sign standards in article XII, which allow wall and freestanding signs for businesses in commercial districts; home occupations get no equivalent allowance regardless of category.

The condition is listed among the affidavit terms an applicant signs for a qualifying occupation, and among the conditions of approval the Board of Zoning Adjustment can only waive by expressly omitting it for a non-qualifying special exception under § 114-101(b).
