Durham's UDO allows a home occupation only one wall sign, limited to 3 square feet, and no separate sign permit is required. There may be no display of goods, products, or services visible from off site.
Under Durham UDO Section 5.4.4, a home occupation is allowed one wall sign no larger than 3 square feet, and that sign does not need a separate Sign Permit (see UDO Section 11.4). Freestanding, illuminated, or larger signage is not permitted for a home business. Separately, the ordinance prohibits any display of goods, products, and services visible from off site, keeping the residential character of the neighborhood. These standards apply identically in the City of Durham and unincorporated Durham County under the joint Unified Development Ordinance.
Signage or displays exceeding these limits are a zoning violation that can bring fines and revocation of the Home Occupation Permit.
