Leaving an abandoned motor vehicle on a Durham street more than seven days, on city property over 24 hours, or on private property without consent over two hours is unlawful and can lead to towing.
City Code Sec. 26-147 makes it unlawful to leave an abandoned motor vehicle on any public street over seven days, on city property over 24 hours, or on private property without the owner's consent over two hours. Junked vehicles that are wrecked, inoperable, unregistered, or aged and low-value may be ordered removed from private property under Sec. 26-149, consistent with the city's authority under NCGS 160A-303. The city gives written notice before towing and provides a hearing procedure for owners.
Offending vehicles are tagged, ordered removed, and towed and stored at the owner's expense after notice; junked vehicles are removed under a housing-code order.
