Josephine County, OR Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Josephine County's home occupation chapter sets exterior sign size by permit tier. Type I home occupations, the lowest tier requiring a permit, may display one nonilluminated exterior sign no larger than six square feet, set back 10 feet from the property line, per § 19.92.050(A)(3). Type II home occupations, which allow more customer traffic and up to four employees, may display one exterior sign up to 12 square feet, also set back 10 feet from the property line, under § 19.92.060(A)(3); the code does not specify Type II signs must be nonilluminated.

Exempt home occupations, the tier below Type I that needs no development permit at all, may not display any exterior sign identifying the property as a business location, per § 19.92.040(A)(2), and the address cannot appear in advertising either. Bed and breakfast inns and farm stays, reviewed as Type III home occupations under § 19.92.110(A)(6), are held to the same 12-square-foot sign and 10-foot setback as Type II. Across every tier, § 19.92.030(A)(4) requires all signage related to the home occupation to be located on site, never in the public right-of-way.
