Katy regulates signs through Article 3.06 of Chapter 3, restricting moving and intermittent lights and prohibiting unpermitted off-premises signs in residential districts where home occupations operate.
Katy's sign regulations are codified in Chapter 3 (Building Regulations), Article 3.06. The provisions apply to all signs within city limits. Electrical signs must conform to the city's electrical code. Moving or intermittent lights are prohibited except for time, date, temperature, weather, or stock market reports. Off-premises signs are tightly restricted in residential zoning districts. Because home occupations must remain a secondary residential use, exterior commercial signage advertising a home business is generally prohibited. Code Enforcement enforces commercial signage violations citywide.
Posting an illuminated business sign at a residence, installing a flashing display, or placing an unpermitted off-premises sign for a home occupation results in code enforcement citations.
