Pleasanton prohibits signs for home occupations. Section 18.104.030 requires that no signs are permitted in connection with a home occupation (referencing the sign rules in Section 18.96.040), and the activity must not be visually apparent beyond the boundaries of the site. Permit-exempt home offices likewise may use no on-premises signing.
Under the City of Pleasanton Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 18.104 (Home Occupations), Section 18.104.030 expressly provides that no signs are permitted in connection with a permitted home occupation in agricultural or residential districts, with the cross-reference to Section 18.96.040 (the sign regulations for A and R districts). The same section requires that the home occupation not be visually apparent beyond the boundaries of the site, which reinforces that a home business cannot use yard signs, window signs, or building signs to advertise to the public. For the lower tier of activity that is exempt from needing a home occupation permit, Section 18.104.020 similarly requires that there be no signing employed on the premises, that the use not be apparent beyond the boundaries of the site, and that the residence address not be used in any advertising. Pleasanton's general sign chapter (Chapter 18.96, Section 18.96.040) does allow certain residential identification signs unrelated to a business, such as a nameplate not exceeding one square foot for a dwelling, but these are not home-occupation business signs. The practical effect is that a Pleasanton home occupation must rely on off-site advertising (phone, internet, mail) rather than any visible on-site sign, and the residence address may not be used in advertising for permit-exempt office uses.
Posting any sign in connection with a home occupation, or making the business otherwise visually apparent beyond the boundaries of the site, violates Section 18.104.030. Using the residence address in advertising for a permit-exempt home office violates Section 18.104.020. Violations can lead to suspension and revocation of the home occupation permit.
