A home occupation in unincorporated Shelby County may not have any sign advertising the business. UDC Section 2.7.4 prohibits home-occupation signage and any visible evidence of the business from the exterior.
The Memphis and Shelby County Unified Development Code Section 2.7.4B states that no signage specifically associated with a home occupation is permitted, and there must be no change in the outside appearance of the building or premises, or other visible evidence of the conduct of a home occupation. In addition, no display of products may be visible from the street. Because a home occupation must remain clearly incidental to the residential use and cannot alter the residential character of the structure, exterior advertising signs, illuminated business signs, and window displays are not allowed. Any business needing on-site signage generally cannot operate as a home occupation and must locate in a district that permits commercial signage under the UDC.
Installing a home-occupation sign, product display, or other visible business evidence violates UDC 2.7.4 and is enforceable by the Office of Planning and Development / Code Enforcement, which may order removal and issue citations.
