252 treats signage as one of the clearest markers separating the tiers. Home-Based Business 1, the tier requiring the business be run exclusively by resident family members with no clients visiting, is barred under subsection (3)(c) from any outside storage, outside signs of any size or type, or other exterior indication of the home occupation or variation from the residential character of the property. That is an absolute prohibition: not a small sign, not a sign below a certain size, no sign at all, and no other visible sign that the property houses a business.

Home-Based Business 2, defined at subsection (4), relaxes that rule at (4)(c): the business may have no outside storage nor other exterior indication, with the exception of one sign not to exceed four square feet, provided such sign must not be illuminated. Home-Based Business 3 carries the identical exception at subsection (5)(d), so both client-facing tiers share the same ceiling, one sign, four square feet maximum, and it can never be lit. Because HBB2 and HBB3 already allow clients to come to the site under (4)(g)/(5)(g), the single small unlit sign functions as the only exterior cue a visitor gets that a home holds a licensed business, keeping the property's residential appearance otherwise unchanged. 252 caps out at the four-square-foot unlit limit regardless of tier.
