South Fulton Zoning Ordinance Sec. 303.11 bars any storage, display, or activity associated with a home occupation from being visible outside the home, and refers signage to the residential sign rules in Article 7. Residential districts allow only limited signs (Table 7-1), so commercial home-business signage is effectively not permitted.
South Fulton tightly limits visible evidence of a home business. Sec. 303.11(e) provides that "There shall there be no storage, display or activity associated with the home occupation visible outside the structure," and Sec. 303.11(d) directs owners to "See Article 7 for sign requirements in residential zoning districts." Article 7 governs signs by district; Table 7-1 (Allowed Signs in Agricultural and Residential Zoning Districts) sets what is permitted in single-family residential districts — generally limited principal signs tied to institutional or business uses for lots with frontage, window signs, and temporary signs, with strict size and number caps (for example, freestanding signs no greater than 6 feet high and 32 square feet). The ordinance does not authorize a dedicated commercial advertising sign for a home occupation operating in a single-family residence, and because no outside activity or display may be visible, a typical storefront-style home-business sign would not comply. In practice this means a South Fulton home occupation generally cannot post a business sign advertising the home business at the residence. Internally illuminated window signs are not allowed in residential districts per Table 7-1. Owners who believe a limited identification sign may be allowed should confirm directly with the Department of Community Development and Regulatory Affairs and review the current Article 7 sign standards, as the city updates its sign code periodically and a sign permit is required for most sign types.
Posting a prohibited home-business sign, or any visible outside display tied to a home occupation, violates Sec. 303.11(e) and Article 7. Code enforcement may require removal. Confirm current penalty amounts with the city.
