Wilmington Land Development Code (LDC) Β§18-250 limits home occupation signage to one non-illuminated nameplate sign, maximum 2 square feet, attached flat to the dwelling; freestanding yard signs and illuminated signs are prohibited.
The City of Wilmington Land Development Code (LDC) regulates home occupations under Β§18-250 and home occupation signage under the LDC Sign standards. Wilmington permits one wall-mounted nameplate identification sign per home occupation, not to exceed 2 square feet in area, mounted flat against the dwelling wall, not projecting more than 12 inches from the wall. The sign must not be illuminated (neither internally nor externally lit). Free-standing signs, pole signs, window signs visible from the street, and signs in the public right-of-way are prohibited for home occupations. The sign may display only the occupant's name and the business name/type; no advertising copy, phone numbers larger than 1-inch letters, or promotional messages. NC is a Dillon's Rule state so Wilmington's authority flows from NC GS Chapter 160D (unified development ordinance enabling). HOAs may impose additional sign restrictions under NC Planned Community Act (GS Chapter 47F). A Zoning Permit is required before installing the sign.
Unpermitted or oversized home occupation sign: $100 first offense civil penalty; $250 second offense; up to $500 per day for continuing violations after notice per LDC Β§18-36. Illegal freestanding signs subject to immediate removal by Code Enforcement. Repeated violations may result in home occupation permit revocation.
