Wilmington, NC Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 18-279(c) permits a home occupation to identify itself with one sign only, capped at 2¼ square feet in area. The sign cannot be illuminated and must be mounted flat against the wall of the principal building, so freestanding, pole-mounted, or window-projecting signs are not permitted for an ordinary home occupation. The subsection also bars any other change in the outside appearance of the building or premises, or any other visible evidence that a business operates there, beyond that single sign. Subsection (g) reinforces the restriction by prohibiting the display of products visible from the street.

Bed and breakfast establishments, a separately regulated home occupation category, follow a different sign standard cross-referenced at Section 18-577(f) of the sign ordinance rather than the 2¼-square-foot cap in Section 18-279(c). The Planning, Development & Transportation Department reviews home occupation sign permits, and any sign larger than 2¼ square feet, illuminated, or mounted away from the building wall does not qualify for a home occupation sign permit and must come down or be replaced with a conforming sign. A nonconforming sign left in place after notice is enforceable the same as any other Section 18-279 violation, through the civil penalties in Section 18-52(b).
