Cambridge allows home occupations by right in most residential districts under the zoning ordinance. The business must be secondary to residential use with no significant traffic or noise impacts.
The Cambridge Zoning Ordinance permits home occupations in residential districts as accessory uses when the business is conducted by the occupant of the dwelling, uses no more than a limited portion of the home (commonly 25 percent of floor area), employs no more than one non-resident employee, and does not change the residential character of the property. Retail sales from the home are generally prohibited except for incidental goods produced on site. Professional services such as consulting, tutoring, counseling, and creative work are commonly permitted. Uses that generate customer traffic, deliveries beyond normal residential levels, noise, vibration, odors, or hazardous materials are prohibited or require a special permit from the Board of Zoning Appeal. Business owners should also register with the Cambridge City Clerk for business certificates required by state law.
