In the City-Parish Unified Development Code, a home occupation is an accessory use of a home that does not change the residential character. It is a Conditional (C) use in most residential districts and must meet the Section 9.4.5 standards, including a 22,500-square-foot minimum lot.
The UDC defines a Home Occupation as an accessory use of a residential dwelling for a business conducted for financial gain that does not change the essential character of the residential use. In the residential zoning use table it is a Conditional (C) use, subject to Section 9.4.5. Key limits: a resident must occupy the dwelling as their primary residence, the lot must be at least 22,500 square feet, and the use is not allowed in a recognized residential subdivision. A separate 'Home Office' category covers limited service activities.
Operating a home occupation that violates the UDC conditions or the wrong zoning district is a code-enforcement matter that can bring cease-and-desist orders and fines.
