Sammamish does not publish a specific maximum lawn or grass height in its Municipal Code. The Sammamish Building and Property Maintenance Code (SMC 16.25.200, Exterior property areas) requires all exterior property and premises to be maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary condition. Code violations are declared public nuisances under SMC 23.30.010 and enforced through the city's code compliance process.
Unlike many cities, Sammamish has not adopted a numeric grass or weed height limit (such as a 'grass over 8 inches' rule). Instead, SMC 16.25.200(1) (Sanitation) requires that 'all exterior property and premises shall be maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary condition,' tying enforcement to the city's general nuisance provisions. Under SMC 23.30.010 (Declaration of public nuisance), all code violations are determined to be detrimental to the public health, safety, welfare and environment and are declared to be public nuisances subject to enforcement under Title 23. Washington statute RCW 35.21.310 separately authorizes any city to require property owners to remove or destroy grass, weeds, shrubs, bushes, or trees that are a fire hazard or a menace to public health, safety, or welfare. Practically, this means overgrown vegetation in Sammamish is addressed case-by-case as a nuisance or fire hazard rather than by a fixed measurement. Heavily forested, naturalized, or native landscaping is common and not itself a violation.
Conditions that rise to a public nuisance under SMC 23.30.010 are handled through Sammamish's code compliance program (Title 23). Penalties under SMC 23.100.010 can include infractions up to $1,000 and noncompliance penalties of $250/day (1-15 days), $500/day (16-31 days), and $1,000/day beyond 31 days. There is no standalone grass-height fine schedule.
