Corpus Christi, TX Landscaping Rules: Native Plants (2026)

Native and drought-tolerant landscaping (xeriscaping) is permitted and encouraged in Corpus Christi due to the semi-arid coastal climate and recurring drought conditions. Texas Property Code 202.007 specifically prevents homeowners associations from prohibiting xeriscaping, native turf, or drought-resistant landscaping on residential property. The city water conservation program promotes replacing high-water-demand turf with native coastal plants adapted to South Texas conditions including salt spray, wind, and heat. Plants such as Texas sage, Gulf muhly grass, lantana, and Gulf Coast penstemon are well suited to the area. During Stage 3 drought restrictions, established native plant gardens require little to no supplemental watering, making them especially practical. Properties must still comply with the 12-inch vegetation height limit and general property maintenance standards under Chapter 13.
