Wright County, MN Landscaping Rules: Tree Removal & Heritage Trees (2026)

For ordinary private land in unincorporated Wright County, there is no tree-removal permit; an owner may clear yard trees without county sign-off. The controls that exist are geographic. On shoreland, the county administers Minnesota's statewide shoreland standards, and intensive vegetation clearing in the shore and bluff impact zones is not allowed, so cutting trees near Pelican Lake, Sugar Lake, the Clearwater chain, or the Mississippi River means working within those limits or seeking approval. Trees in the county or township road right-of-way are public and off-limits to residents. Inside Buffalo, Monticello, St. Michael, and Albertville, each city runs its own tree and boulevard program.
