Annapolis's urban forestry program protects significant trees in the public right-of-way and Historic District. Property owners may not trim or remove street trees (in the right-of-way) without contacting the city's Public Works Department. Trees on private property over 8 inches DBH require a tree removal permit when in the Historic District or near the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area buffer. The city encourages canopy preservation as part of its Chesapeake Bay restoration goals. Replacement planting is required for removed trees in the Critical Area. HOA communities may have additional tree preservation rules.
