Anne Arundel County's Forest Conservation Act requires tree permits for lots over 40,000 sq ft. Chesapeake Bay Critical Area buffer trees are protected. Specimen trees (30+ inches DBH) receive heightened review during development projects.
The Anne Arundel County Forest Conservation Act requires a forest conservation plan for development activities on lots exceeding 40,000 sq ft. Individual residential tree trimming on smaller lots does not require a county permit. However, trees in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area buffer (within 1,000 feet of tidal waters) are protected and may not be removed without a Critical Area study and authorization. Specimen trees β those with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 30 inches or more β receive heightened review during development project approvals. The county's Forest Conservation Program encourages voluntary preservation and replanting. HOA communities may have additional tree protection rules.
Unpermitted removal on 40,000+ sq ft lots: reforestation requirements and fines. Critical Area tree removal without authorization: MDE enforcement.
