Lynwood protects public, street, landmark, native, and specimen trees under Municipal Code Section 13-2. Pruning a landmark tree or any work on a public or street tree requires city authorization, while ordinary private trees may be pruned freely.
Under Section 13-2 (Ord. #1648), the city engineer regulates pruning of protected trees. Section 13-2.11 requires a permit to prune a landmark tree anywhere in the city, applied for on a city form to ensure work meets current International Society of Arboriculture standards. Section 13-2.13 provides that no permits are issued to private parties for pruning or removing public trees; that work is done by city crews or contractors, though a resident may request and pay for it. Section 13-2.14 exempts pruning a native or specimen tree on private property as long as the tree is not injured, and trees not protected by the section.
Under Section 13-2.15, pruning a landmark tree without a permit, or pruning or removing a public tree, is prohibited and prosecuted under Chapter 1 (Section 13-2.22). Planting a non-official street tree species in a parkway carries a civil penalty.
