Spokane County does not require a permit to trim trees on your own private land. Owners must, however, keep vegetation from blocking road sight distance, and required landscaping trees must stay healthy. Public Works trims right-of-way trees affecting visibility.
For ordinary private-yard trees, unincorporated Spokane County imposes no trimming permit. The Zoning Code does require, where parking or display areas front a street, that plantings 'shall not obstruct the sight distance at street intersections or driveway approaches' (SCC 14.806.100). Vegetation along county roads that inhibits intersection visibility is trimmed by Spokane County Public Works, and residents are encouraged to report sight-line hazards. Trees planted as part of an approved landscape plan must be maintained in a healthy condition. Trimming or clearing inside a designated critical area or buffer is separately regulated under the Critical Areas Ordinance (SCC Title 11).
Failure to maintain required landscaping (including neglecting trees) is a Zoning Code violation under SCC 14.806.160. Critical-area vegetation removal without approval is enforced under Title 11.
