Each spring the City of Antioch runs an Annual Weed Abatement Program with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District to clear flammable vegetation before fire season. Overgrown weeds on private property are also a Specific Nuisance Prohibited under Antioch MC § 5-1.202, enforceable by Code Enforcement with abatement costs charged back to the owner.
Antioch's weed-control regime has two complementary layers. First, Antioch Municipal Code § 5-1.202 (within Title 5, Chapter 1, Article 2, Specification of Nuisances) declares it a Specific Nuisance Prohibited to maintain premises where overgrown, dead, or decayed trees, weeds, or other vegetation pose a public-safety risk, constitute visual blight, are detrimental to neighbors' use and enjoyment, or reduce nearby property values. Second, the City coordinates with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District on an Annual Weed Abatement Program. For 2026 the program began March 30, 2026 and was scheduled to wrap on or before June 30, 2026, with the East-County (Antioch, Bay Point, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen, Marsh Creek, Morgan Territory, Oakley, Pittsburg) compliance deadline of May 15, 2026. CCCFPD's Minimum Weed Abatement Standards, adopted under California Health and Safety Code Division 12, Part 5 and Contra Costa County Ordinance 2023-07, define a 'weed' as any wild plant, dry grass, tree litter, or other flammable material capable of igniting and creating a fire hazard, and obligate the parcel owner to eliminate exterior fire hazards. Maps of the City-owned parcels included in Antioch's program are posted on the Public Works Street Maintenance page; residents may report private-property violations through the City or CCCFPD.
Code Enforcement issues a Notice to Abate; failure to comply lets the City (for nuisance / blight) or CCCFPD (for fire-hazard vegetation) hire contractors to perform abatement and bill the owner. The unpaid cost becomes a special assessment lien against the parcel, collected on the property-tax roll. Recurring violations can be charged as infractions or misdemeanors under AMC Title 1, Chapter 2 (General Penalty).
