Broward County bans Florida Category I invasive plants from new landscaping and requires owners to remove nuisance weeds over 18 inches under the Nuisance Abatement Code.
Broward County Code Chapter 27 (Natural Resource Protection) prohibits the planting, sale, or transport of Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council Category I invasive species, including Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), melaleuca, Australian pine, and earleaf acacia. Development permits require removal of these species from the site before final approval. Chapter 8.5 (Nuisance Abatement) additionally requires owners to keep yards free of weeds taller than 18 inches. Enforcement is complaint-driven through Broward Code Enforcement. Invasive vines such as air potato may trigger specific removal orders because of their rapid spread into Everglades conservation areas. Herbicide use must follow Florida Department of Agriculture pesticide labeling and cannot contaminate canals or stormwater ponds.
