Henrico County, VA Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Henrico County Code § 10-136(a) provides that weeds more than 12 inches in height within 150 feet of adjacent property and public streets on any developed property constitute a nuisance. Under § 10-135, 'weeds' means grass, weeds, bushes, poison ivy, poison oak, or any other foreign growth other than trees, ornamental shrubbery, flowers, and garden vegetables. The director of community revitalization, upon inspection, sends the owner (and principal occupant, if different) a written notice to cut within a reasonable time; one written notice per growing season constitutes reasonable notice (§ 10-137). Because Henrico has no incorporated towns, this 12-inch standard applies to all Short Pump, Glen Allen, Sandston, Highland Springs, and other communities countywide.
